Finally, twenty months and 1.5 million migrants after the Census date last year, here is what the ONS has to say:

On Census Day, the size of the usual resident population in England and Wales was 59,597,300.  The population of England was 56,489,800.  The population of Wales was 3,107,500.  This was the largest the population has ever been.

About the natives it has this to say:

In 2021, 81.7% (48.7 million) of usual residents in England and Wales identified their ethnic group within the high-level “White” category, a decrease from 86.0% (48.2 million) in the 2011 Census ...

Within the “White” ethnic group, 74.4% (44.4 million) of usual residents in England and Wales identified their ethnic group as “English, Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish or British”. This was a decrease from 80.5% (45.1 million) in 2011, and a continued decrease from 2001, when 87.5% (45.5 million) identified as “White: British”.

There was a decrease in the number of people identifying their ethnic group as “White: Irish”, from 531,000 (0.9%) in 2011 to 507,000 (0.9%) in 2021.

So according to the ONS, in the decade to March 2021we have declined by 700,000 or 1.55%.  We are 73.9% of the total population (my finger-in-the-air estimate, in the run-up to this release, was 72%, so naturally I am concluding that the Establishment is playing things down!).

On the colonising groups the ONS had this to say:

•  The next most common high-level ethnic group was “Asian, Asian British or Asian Welsh” accounting for 9.3% (5.5 million) of the overall population, this ethnic group also saw the largest percentage point increase from 2011, up from 7.5% (4.2 million people).

•  Across the 19 ethnic groups, the largest percentage point increase was seen in the number of people identifying through the “White: Other White” category (6.2%, 3.7 million in 2021, up from 4.4%, 2.5 million in 2011), this response option allows people to specify their ethnic group through writing it in; the increase may be partly explained by the new search-as-you-type functionality introduced for Census 2021, making it easier for people to self-define when completing the census online.

•  Large changes were also seen in the numbers of people identifying their ethnic group as “Other ethnic group: Any other ethnic group” (1.6%, 924,000 in 2021, up from 0.6%, 333,000 in 2011), and “Black, Black British, Black Welsh, Caribbean or African: African” (2.5%, 1.5 million in 2021, up from 1.8%, 990,000); both ethnic groups had the option to write in their response.

•  In England and Wales, 10.1% (2.5 million) of households consisted of members identifying with two or more different ethnic groups, an increase from 8.7% (2.0 million) in 2011.

In terms of significant milestones the Census reveals that “two-thirds of Londoners now identify as being from an ethnic minority, with just 36.8 per cent of people identifying as “white English, Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish or British”.  The natives are also now a minority in Birmingham, England’s second city.

A reminder of what the Oxford demographer David Coleman wrote in Standpoint Magazine in June 2016:

Even without migration … the White British population would cease to be the majority in the UK by the late 2060s. However, should current high levels of immigration persist for any length of time, that date would move closer to the present. Britain would then become unrecognisable to its present inhabitants. Some would welcome a brave new experiment, pioneering a wider world future. Others might say Finis Britanniae.

We have arrived at that strange moment, as we do every decade, when the Office of National Statistics begins to behave like a coquettish but no longer young and nubile dame sashaying across the stage of some ferociously vulgar 18th century farce.  First we are treated to the revealing of a stockinged ankle and, then, a flash of petty-coat hem.  By the beginning of March we should have the full, ghastly reveal with the final figures from the 2021 Census, collected this time last year.  Today, though, we just had a little, Replacement-confirming appetiser:

Migrants will stop Britain’s population from falling during next decade
ONS predicts 59,000 more deaths than births over the next 10 years, but increase in net migration will prevent population from declining

The UK population would fall in the next decade if it were not for migration, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has forecast for the first time.

In a report published on Wednesday, the ONS predicted 59,000 more deaths than births over the next 10 years because of a declining fertility rate, as women have fewer children and the number of elderly people increases sharply.

This would have meant the population declined for the first time since records began to 67 million, but for a 2.2 million increase in net migration taking the projected total for the UK to 69.2 million in mid-2030.

It represents a net 200,000 extra migrants settling in the UK each year for the next decade, according to the ONS estimates, despite Brexit ending free movement from Europe.

... However, ONS figures showed that the total fertility rate for England and Wales fell to 1.58 children per woman in 2020, the lowest since records began in 1938. One reason is the increasing numbers of women, now better educated than men, who are delaying children until their 30s as they pursue careers ...

Not much.  But it’s a win and it appears to be unusual.

However, is it unusual that a case like this appears on the front age of the Telegraph website, or are these cases unusual?  Is it that the media have not really reported them or do indigenous Brits simply put up with arrogant big mouthery from non-whites in positions of authority over them?

Worker told ‘English people are lazy drunks’ wins discrimination claim
A transport company employee who was an ethnic minority at his workplace has won a discrimination claim after his colleagues jeered that the English were lazy drunks.

James Heeley, an administrator at Birk Holdings, was repeatedly teased about his nationality by his co-workers, who asked whether he was “still drunk” when he came to the office.

His boss, Gurvinder Singh Birk, was overheard saying English employees are “lazy and only interested in claiming benefits”.

Mr Heeley was one of five white British employees at the company of 16 - making him a “minority”, the employment tribunal in Bury St Edmunds heard.

... Mr Birk was ordered to pay Mr Heeley £2,500 in compensation for injury to feelings, and a further £961.74 for breaching employment law.

Mr Heeley began working at Birk Holdings in Peterborough in October 2017 and was sacked in March 2019 by Mr Birk, who cited concerns about his performance, attendance and time keeping.

The tribunal panel, chaired by Employment Judge Jennifer Bartlett, found that he was subjected to numerous derogatory comments.

Senior employees said “English drivers do drive slowly” and accused Mr Heeley of not working hard because “he’s English”, the tribunal heard.

On one occasion, two colleagues sneered: “Can tell you’re British as you don’t have your coat on. Are you still drunk from last night?”

After Mr Heeley took a few days off sick, an employee said: “Oh, the lazy English worker has decided to come back to work”. The same employee commented: “Lazy English workers are always off sick”.

Mr Birk was said to have told a senior employee not to hire British workers because they “can turn you down easily and claim benefits”.

The tribunal panel agreed that Mr Heeley had suffered race discrimination and harassment.

It concluded: “We consider that the comments are serious such that they create a hostile and/or intimidating environment because they are by a number of reasonably senior individuals, over a period of time, repeated and in a workplace in which the claimant was a minority.

“We do not accept that the fact that he called some of the comments jokes undermines their effect on him. Many extremely unpleasant behaviours can be dressed up as jokes but it is no excuse.”

China will no longer recognise the British National Overseas passport.  So it’s 2.9 million citizens in Hong Kong citizens, all of them invited to come and settle in Britain from this Sunday but “only” 300,000 anticipated to do so, won’t be able to board a flight (or will be deterred from boarding a flight):

China was branded ‘weak, bullying and petulant’ today as it refused to allow Hong Kong citizens to leave using British passports amid a furious row over UK plans to grant residency to thousands of people.

The communist regime’s foreign ministry today said it would not recognise the British National Overseas passport as a valid travel document.

The sabre-rattling came ahead of a plan to start offering UK residency visas to Hong Kongers from this weekend.

Downing Street today refused to be cowed by the outcry from Beijing and underscored the commitment it made to Hong Kong nationals.

Around 300,000 people are expected to leave Hong Kong for Britain under the new scheme, unveiled by Boris Johnson in the wake of China’s national security law.

But a statement by foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian plunged the visa system into uncertainty just hours after it was announced to be launching on Sunday.

Of course, stopping the exodus is exactly what Brits want.  Neoliberal Tories will be outraged.  Paeans to the industriousness and enterprise of Hong Kongers have been appearing all over the right-wing press for months.  Daniel Hannon even wanted to give them the Isle of Wight.

Plunge in foreign-born workers as Covid destroys jobs
Unemployment surges to 4.8pc while redundancies soar by 181,000 in the three months to September

The number of foreign-born workers employed in the UK fell by almost 600,000 in the past year as Covid laid waste to the jobs market and sparked an exodus of migrants.

There are now 765,000 fewer people of working age born abroad in Britain than there were a year ago, with a bigger fall in those from the EU than those from the rest of the world.

... The fall in workers from the EU14 - nations such as France and Germany - in the UK is similar to the drop seen during the financial crisis.

However, a far greater share of those from the EU8, which covers more workers from Eastern European nations including Poland, have been affected.

... The UK’s reliance on foreign employees acts as a “safety valve”, said Martin Beck at Oxford Economics, sucking in workers when the economy is doing well, and shedding them again in downturns.

“It keeps the unemployment rate down - people are losing their jobs but are not adding to the unemployment rolls. It is a stabilising force for the jobs market. It is bad to lose those jobs, but the fiscal cost is not being borne by the UK taxpayer,” he said.

It means unemployment is unlikely to rise as high as 7pc by the end of the year, or to meet the gloomier predictions of 10pc or more in 2021, he said, because the fall in foreign-born workers over the past year has already reduced the workforce by as much as 2pc.

“I would expect those people to come back if things do recover quickly and get back to normal, Brexit permitting,” said Mr Beck.

Overall, firms laid off 181,000 people between July and September, pushing the total to 314,000.  Experimental figures also suggested an extra 33,000 employees shed from company payrolls in October, signalling 782,000 fewer people in work compared to pre-pandemic March.

The DT reports on an ONS survey into the reducing pay-gap between “white” people and “BAME ethnic minorities” (they are not ethnic minorities, of course, because they are foreign colonisers; and we are not merely white, we are the native British).

The pay gap between white and ethnic minority employees continues to fall and has reached its smallest level for seven years, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has found. Researchers found there was a 2.3 per cent gap in earnings between white and ethnic minority employees in England and Wales in 2019.

White employees earned on average £12.40 per hour, compared with £12.11 for those in 17 ethnic minority groups on average.

... Ethnic minority employees aged 30 and over tend to earn less than their white counterparts, while those aged 16-29 tend to earn more, the ONS research showed.

This year, the ONS found that Chinese, white Irish, white and Asian and Indian ethnicities earned more on average than white British employees between 2012 and 2019. However, most ethnic groups, including Bangladeshi, Pakistani and Arab, consistently earned less than white British employees over the same period.

The biggest gaps were between Pakistani workers (£10.55 per hour) and white British (£12.49 per hour), while white Irish workers earned £17.55 per hour on average.

Taking into account factors such as age, sex, marital status, children, qualifications, country of birth and location of employees narrows the gap for many ethnic groups, the ONS found.

... It found the gap is larger for men than women, although men earn more than women across most ethnic groups. In 2019, ethnic minority men earned 6.1 per cent less than white men, while the hourly pay of ethnic minority women was 2.1% more than white women.

That difference was most pronounced in London, at 23.8 per cent, and smallest in Wales, at 1.4 per cent, the ONS, which analysed data on earnings from the Annual Population Survey, said.

“It almost passes belief that at this moment 20 or 30 additional immigrant children are arriving from overseas in Wolverhampton alone every week - and that means 15 or 20 additional families a decade or two hence. Those whom the gods wish to destroy, they first make mad. We must be mad, literally mad, as a nation to be permitting the annual inflow of some 50,000 dependants, who are for the most part the material of the future growth of the immigrant-descended population. It is like watching a nation busily engaged in heaping up its own funeral pyre. So insane are we that we actually permit unmarried persons to immigrate for the purpose of founding a family with spouses and fiancés whom they have never seen.”
