The disgraced district attorney in the Duke lacrosse rape case apologized to the three athletes in a carefully worded statement Thursday as their lawyers weighed whether to sue him - and some legal experts say they have a case.

While prosecutors generally have immunity for what they do inside the courtroom, experts said that protection probably doesn’t cover some of Mike Nifong’s more questionable actions in his handling of the case - such as calling the lacrosse players “a bunch of hooligans” in one of several interviews deemed unethical by the state bar.

“I think their chances of success suing Mr. Nifong are reasonably good, despite what we call prosecutorial immunity,” said John Banzhaf, a professor at the George Washington University School of Law.

On Wednesday, North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper threw out the case against the three young men, pronounced them innocent and delivered a withering attack on Nifong, portraying him as a “rogue” prosecutor guilty of “overreaching.” Cooper said Nifong rushed the case, failed to verify the accuser’s allegations and pressed on despite the warning signs.

In his first comment on that decision, Nifong said in a statement Thursday: “To the extent that I made judgments that ultimately proved to be incorrect, I apologize to the three students that were wrongly accused.”

He issued what appeared to be a plea to the students not to take any further action, saying, “It is my sincere desire that the actions of Attorney General Cooper will serve to remedy any remaining injury that has resulted from these cases.”

So far, attorneys for David Evans, Reade Seligmann, and Collin Finnerty have not said whether they plan a civil action against Nifong. But they have not ruled it out.

Indecent Assault - Yoker

Strathclyde Police is appealing for witnesses after a 33-year-old woman and her 1- year-old son were indecently assaulted near Yoker.

About 1630 hours on Tuesday 3 April 2007 a 33-year-old woman was walking her 1-year-old son in his pram on the cycle path between Plean Street and Dyke Road, Yoker, Glasgow when they were approached by a group of males who threw stones at them and then kicked the woman.

One man then exposed himself and indecently assaulted the woman and then attempted to perform an indecent act on the 1-year-old boy.

The woman fled the scene with her child, leaving the pram, a headscarf and a baby’s bottle on the cycle path.

The suspect is described as a white male, aged 20 to 25, very short hair, tall and thin and wearing white and blue track suit trousers.

DI Andy McWilliam said today “This was a particularly harrowing ordeal for the woman and her son. I would urge the other males in this group to assist the police in identifying the male responsible. I am also keen to locate the whereabouts of the pram, headscarf and baby’s bottle.

No mention yet of video or DNA evidence, which would seal the issue.  But we’ll see.

Yet another study verifies the knowledge we gain through experience:-

Blacks tend to be prideful and self-inflated.

The poor academic and economic achievement of black people is often blamed on low self-esteem, the result of discrimination from birth and endless negative stereotypes. But the most definitive study on the subject now contradicts this belief: black teenagers do not have lower self-esteem than whites, but higher. Anti-racism campaigners claim that the report suggests there is even more discrimination against blacks than previously thought.

In an article in the US journal Psychological Bulletin, an African-American psychologist shows that whatever the effects of racism, poor self-esteem is not one of them. Except for the very young and very rich, blacks have higher self-esteem than their white counterparts, she demonstrates, and have had for years.

Bernadette Gray-Little, a professor of psychology at the University of North Carolina, performed a complex review of every piece of research available on black self-esteem. Using a technique called meta-analysis, her research culled data from the studies and treated them as if they were part of one giant study, making her results less likely to be the result of chance.

‘There have been inconsistencies in the results of the studies on this topic over time,’ says Gray-Little. ‘I wanted to see if I could find any basis for a firm conclusion. And if inconsistencies occurred, I wanted to know when and why.’

She found that before the age of 10, whites slightly surpass blacks in self-esteem. Everyone’s self-esteem dips in the later years of school. After that, blacks narrowly but consistently surpass whites, up to the age of 21, the upper limit of the study.

The self-esteem gap seems to depend on wealth. Low-income blacks show higher self-esteem than low-income whites. But the gap disap pears at higher income levels. The study also shows that black self-esteem has not risen over time. The theory of many psychologists was that as blacks gained in civil liberties, their self-esteem would rise. But the study shows it has never been low.

The report will confound black activists who have seen raising black self-esteem as the key to overcoming social disadvantage.

So blacks typically have higher self-esteem than their white counterparts.  However - in typical fashion - the results of the study have been interpreted through the lens of egalitarianism which, like its optical counterpart, reverses reality:-

Last June I reported on some military crystall-ball gazing by the MoD’s Development, Concepts & Doctrine Centre.  In a speech to the United Services Institute in London, the DCDC’s head, Rear Admiral Chris Parry,  spoke of a “Europe, including Britain ... undermined by large immigrant groups with little allegiance to their host countries” within 10 years.

Yesterday the Guardian ran a piece on another DCDC report, this time looking 30 years ahead.  Some of it, including the observation that the middle-class might transmogrify into Marxist revolutionaries, gave me a good laugh.  Parry should have taken a few political lessons from the Birmingham School of 1970.

But this was more interesting:-

Pressures leading to social unrest

By 2010 more than 50% of the world’s population will be living in urban rather than rural environments, leading to social deprivation and “new instability risks”, and the growth of shanty towns. By 2035, that figure will rise to 60%. Migration will increase. Globalisation may lead to levels of international integration that effectively bring inter-state warfare to an end. But it may lead to “inter-communal conflict” - communities with shared interests transcending national boundaries and resorting to the use of violence.

Population and Resources

The global population is likely to grow to 8.5bn in 2035, with less developed countries accounting for 98% of that. Some 87% of people under the age of 25 live in the developing world. Demographic trends, which will exacerbate economic and social tensions, have serious implications for the environment - including the provision of clean water and other resources - and for international relations. The population of sub-Saharan Africa will increase over the period by 81%, and that of Middle Eastern countries by 132%.

Assuming that these above-average military brains are sequential in their thinking, and don’t start from scratch somewhere else every time, last June’s report and this one should be read together.  In a nutshell, if Europe, including Britain, risks being “undermined by large immigrant groups with little allegiance to their host countries” within 10 years, and international “integration” leads to “communities with shared interests transcending national boundaries and resorting to the use of violence” within 30, we dissident sinners have got it wholly right.

Perhaps it would be unkind to mail Rear Admiral Parry and ask him where in his dark visions is the la-la land of multicultural happiness.  He cannot reply “In the liberal imagination,” and keep his rather interesting job.

The emotional subject of white American resettlement out of the south-west has been featuring here pretty regularly of late.  James has posted some related material.  But most of the energy for this discussion is on the threads where the chief proponent of resettlement is GT, who you will recall also guest-blogged for us on black serial killers three weeks ago.

Now, the 5th April issue of Nature is carrying a feature that will greatly interest GT.  The headline, “Return of the dustbowl”, is alarmist and doesn’t really do credit to the seriousness of the research.  But here’s the straight from the shoulder payoff:-

The drought that spawned the great American Dust Bowl of the 1930s may become the new climatic norm for much of the southwestern United States and other subtropical regions of the world. In a report published today, researchers in the United States and Israel project an imminent increase in aridity in subtropical regions over the next century, which will affect several important agricultural regions.

The results indicate that growing drought in the southwest is a problem that is likely to affect agriculture. “This is something that is already under way. It’s not an end of the twenty-first century thing where we have the luxury to sit around and wait,” says Richard Seager, a climatologist with the Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory in New York, who led the 13-member research team ...

“This is a robust prediction that’s been backed by observation,” says Dennis Hartmann, a climatologist in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Washington, Seattle. “It seems like a reasonable scenario for the future.”

The implications for such a drying are far-reaching. California, for instance, accounts for approximately 16% of all US agricultural exports. Seager suggests that North American farmers need to rethink certain agricultural practices, including adopting more water-efficient irrigation systems such as those being used in Israel.

And, where there are water shortages, there is also the potential for political conflict. “As Mark Twain wrote, ‘Whiskey is for drinking. Water is for fighting over’,” says Seager. Mexico depends on water originating from the Colorado River, he notes, whereas Iraq and Syria depend on the waters of the Euphrates, which originate in Turkey. Cross-border conflicts are likely to arise as these streams of water dry up.

It is not, therefore, at all unreasonable to posit, as GT does, that ethnic competition in the south-west will centre on water - and thus food - availability.  Watch for the early signs that others, who may not intend white Americans much good, understand both this and the need to secure the situation for themselves first.

In May 2005 a generally good review of Frank Salter’s On Genetic Interests appeared here.  It is by Pierre van den Berghe, the Congolese-born Belgian sociologist who coined the term, ethnic nepotism.  I hope that the following reproduction of that review will interest and inform MR readers.  It is interspersed with a brief commentary by JW.

This is the kind of book which social scientists should read if they ever hope to become literate about human biology and its implications for our social behaviour. For many, if not most social scientists, human sociobiology (or evolutionary psychology, or behavioural ecology, or ethology, or whatever label you want to give to the biology of behaviour) is simply anathema, on both theoretical and ideological grounds. However, increasing minorities of anthropologists, psychologists, economists, political scientists and sociologists are beginning to absorb the social implications of human evolution and genetics. All ideological trends, by the way, are represented among these ‘revisionists’.

Salter’s book is divided into three parts. First, he expands W. D. Hamilton’s ‘inclusive kinship’ theory to ethnies. Then he draws the policy implications of ethnic nepotism. Finally, he concludes with the ethics thereof. No summary can do justice to a work so rich and novel in content, but let me try.

Of course, appeal to authority is not a logical argument.  But it is encouraging that guys like van den Berghe and E.O.Wilson have commented favorably on Salter’s work and have not, for example, compared it to Jack D Ripper ranting about “precious bodily fluids” in the movie Dr. Strangelove

How we live ... we.  In ways we all understand, the whole of the 20th Century was a working out of the question of how we may live, justly, as people of the modern era.  The answer to which postmodernity, ably assisted by certain interested parties, seems to have brought us is that our children’s generation and all the generations that follow them shall never take up arms against their neighbour nor threaten the Jewish destiny nor enslave the backward African. 

For these, the worst sins in the world, our children shall be of a people no more.  They shall be consigned to racial anonymity.  One among many, they shall be atomised individuals laying claim no more to the lands of their fathers.  Their lives shall be lighted no more by the ancient, natural virtues of dignity and honour, which all European peoples have held dear, but by a petty tolerance, fairness and false decency.  Mindless work shall fill the daylight hours and dedicated consumerism shall follow.  Drinking, drug-taking, gambling, football shall dull their senses, analgaesia in consolation for the loss of everything.
