Remember the only person in the room professional enough to carry a weapon?

Well, he’s back ... his foot healed and, apparently, not having shot himself anywhere else.  And he’s mad.  At the Drug Enforcement Administration, which employs him and which he blames for releasing that video and making him a laughing stock.  How does the song go?  Woke up one morning, got myself a lawyer.

Read and enjoy.

Hat tip to Geoff for digging up the link.

Intellect & feeling

Posted by Guest Blogger on Tuesday, 11 April 2006 12:12.

I have enjoyed John Ray’s recent posts about his cultural outings in Brissie with his lady friend.

What interested me most, though, was something he wrote in the comments section of one of these posts. In response to GW he said of the religious impulse that,

Yes.  It is an instinctive thing.  Either you have it or not.  I of course feel much richer for having it.  I am slightly surprised that you do not as there is a modest positive correlation between ethnic sentiment and religious sentiment.  I think my ethnic sentiments are similar to yours but I no more let that dictate my conclusions than I allow my religious instincts to make me a believer.  So I do FEEL similarly about the two areas.  Not to be impulse-driven is of course a marker of both civilization and modernity.  But I at least still enjoy feeling as I do.

So John feels personally enriched by a positive sense of ethnic identity and by a sympathy for his own religious tradition. However, intellectually he cannot accept the validity of either.

Slavery ancient and modern

Posted by Guessedworker on Monday, 10 April 2006 11:51.

I don’t suppose fires will be set yet again in the hallways of Academia, or Leeds University anyway, over the speech crime of Classics professor, Malcolm Heath.  But you never know.

Poor Prof Heath appears to have miscalculated somewhat in seeking to explain away Aristotle’s wonderfully offensive thoughts on slaves.  It isn’t an easy job.  This, in part, is what the old boy said (in Poetics, Book 1, chapters 3 and 7):-

But is there any one thus intended by nature to be a slave, and for whom such a condition is expedient and right, or rather is not all slavery a violation of nature?

There is no difficulty in answering this question, on grounds both of reason and of fact. For that some should rule and others be ruled is a thing not only necessary, but expedient; from the hour of their birth, some are marked out for subjection, others for rule.

... But among barbarians [that’s us - Ed] no distinction is made between women and slaves, because there is no natural ruler among them: they are a community of slaves, male and female. Wherefore the poets say, “It is meet that Hellenes should rule over barbarians” as if they thought that the barbarian and the slave were by nature one.

Now, some may give Aristotle the benefit of the doubt on racial supremacism and accuse him merely of being the worst kind of snob, if not a tad sexist.  But Prof Heath appears to have grasped the Nazi nettle eagerly and with both hands:-

Just four lads who blew themselves up

Posted by Guessedworker on Sunday, 09 April 2006 08:26.

The official inquiry into the 7 July London bombings will say the attack was planned on a shoestring budget from information on the internet, that there was no ‘fifth-bomber’ and no direct support from al-Qaeda, although two of the bombers had visited Pakistan.

The first forensic account of the atrocity that claimed the lives of 52 people, which will be published in the next few weeks, will say that attacks were the product of a ‘simple and inexpensive’ plot hatched by four British suicide bombers bent on martyrdom.

Far from being the work of an international terror network, as originally suspected, the attack was carried out by four men who had scoured terror sites on the internet. Their knapsack bombs cost only a few hundred pounds, according to the first completed draft of the government’s definitive report into the blasts.

Mark Towsnend, writing in The Observer today.

So these well-adjusted, Westernised young men, all born in Britain and led by a married thirty-year old special-needs teacher, were entirely self-motivated and self-trained.  There was no AQ hand at work.  There was no international flow of funds.  There was no connection to the wider world of Islamic terror at all other than via a few “How To” websites and a rant by Ayman al-Zawahiri, which someone tacked on to Mohammad Sidique Khan’s video broadcast by Al-Jazeera.

The Amygdala War: Amygdala activity patterns differ between men and women

Posted by James Bowery on Sunday, 09 April 2006 08:21.

UC Irvine researchers Larry Cahill and Lisa Kirkpatrick have discovered a reliable difference in brain activity between men and women.  Basically the amygdala, the most sexually dimorphic brain structure—which shrinks 25% upon castration in men—also shows opposite activity in men and women.  In men the right amygdala is most active—in women the left amygdala is most active.  Moreover when the person is at rest, their amygdalas are active in both men and women but they communicate with different parts of the brain—not merely a right-left mirror between the sexes.

We must not speculate about the implications, let alone jump to any conclusions about this before the appropriate catechism has been given us by the feminist/gayness “theorists”.  Well, except for me because I’m so disobedient.  I think we’re getting much closer to detecting the means by which parasitic castration of relatively recessive populations may be occurring.

Nature meets nurture in a nightclub loo

Posted by Guessedworker on Saturday, 08 April 2006 08:39.

Libby Brooks wants more for the teachers in Britain’s schools to do.  She wants gender education for our children.

She has, you see, noticed that the sexualisation of society has become white-hot of late - boringly so, in fact.  The aspect of this which she worries about is commercial ... raunchy billboards, company expense accounts at the lap-club, etc.  She worries that the nett effect of this is that our daughters are being enculturated by people interested only in money into giving themselves away meaninglessly in back alleys and nightclub toilets.  The “sexual saturation of modern western culture”, she call it.  A good phrase.

She has half a point here, and if she was more a critic and less a creature of modernity she might have a whole point.  For example, she seems to have realised that sexual liberation has been a liberation for men.  Yet she is no social conservative.  Sex for Libby should be seen as an exercise of the female will rather than, say, a submission to Prospero’s “fire i’ the blood”.

Me, I’m a “fire i’ the blood” man whose thoughts turn every six seconds, or whatever it is, to how to open the tinder box, and whose evil designs thereon need to be met firmly in the negative or all female honour will be stolen.  That makes me a believer in sex as Nature.

Libby - a feminist, of course, as well as a liberal - drags her politics into it and is, therefore, a believer in sex as consumption.  But not, of course, consumerism.  Her lodestar is that fully-human, liberated woman again.  In case you haven’t met this mythical creature yet, she’s the one who is mysteriously capable of:-

celebrating the human freedom that sex embodies

... and who knows:-

how desire can take us to the heart of our greatest potential: that in a moment we might be anybody or anything.

The Lion, Lynn, American Ashkenazim and Antisemitism

Posted by James Bowery on Thursday, 06 April 2006 19:54.

Plugging Lynn’s figure for American Ashkenazim verbal IQ (107) into La Griffe du Lion’s Smart Fraction Theory II yields a predicted percapita GDP of about $30,000.  The Lion’s SFT2 is an exceedingly good (r>.9 and p

<.001) way of predicting percapita GDP from average verbal IQ as reported by

Lynn and Vanhanen in “IQ and the Wealth of Nations”

Two key questions for theories of antisemitism in America are to what extent:

  1. Does American* Ashkenazim percapita GDP differ from $30,000, and
  2. Does percapita GDP measure acquisition as opposed to creation of wealth?

*Israel’s mean verbal IQ is lower than 100.

Letter to The Times

Posted by Guessedworker on Monday, 03 April 2006 22:35.

Many thanks to Geoff Beck for bringing to our attention the following important letter in The Times:-

Racial IQ research

IN CLEAR violation of the tradition of academic freedom, the vice-chancellor of Leeds University has suspended Dr Frank Ellis and instituted disciplinary proceedings against him for presenting the research, published in peer-reviewed academic journals and scholarly books which demonstrates that blacks have, on average, lower IQ scores and poorer academic achievement than do whites (Profile, last week). Much solid research also makes it more likely than not that there is a genetic contribution to this (and other) group IQ differences. Dr Ellis, then, has done no more than restate what has been said for half century by a number of eminent psychologists and anthropologists at leading universities.

These include the late John Baker (Oxford), Hans Eysenck (London), Philip Vernon (London), Richard Herrnstein (Harvard), and Henry Garrett (Columbia).

A number of behavioural scientists, including ourselves, have reached the same conclusion. Others have put much of this on the record. Many more agree but have been reluctant to put this on the record for fear of the kind of intimidation that Dr Ellis is receiving from the University of Leeds.

There is an important and legitimate debate going on on intelligence and genetics, as there is on climate change and foreign policy. It is a sad day when British universities muzzle their academic staff and threaten them with dismissal for taking part in one of these controversies.
