London’s sudden vibrancy explained

Posted by Guessedworker on Tuesday, 11 October 2005 23:09.

Each time I journey through my capital city I find myself shocked by the quantity of aliens I see.  There is no doubt in my mind that this has been an extraordinarily sudden and recent development.  Before 1997 there were, of course, far too many immigrants around.  But nothing like what I see today.

I have it on unimpeachable authority that, until this year, the government had no idea how many of our, of course, always vibrant new countrymen were here illegally.  Too many of the leading demographers couldn’t be trusted by the Home Office because they were associated with the stirling MigrationWatch.  When, finally, ministers could commission one who wasn’t, they found themselves staring at a June 2005 report giving a:-

... best estimate of 430,000 but the number could be between 310,000 and 570,000.

The Tories claim the estimate shows an immigration shambles and say it should have been released during the election.

... The Home Office estimate does not include asylum seekers whose claims are being processed, or who are appealing against a refusal.

It was produced by taking the numbers of foreign-born people living in the UK recorded in the 2001 Census and subtracting the estimated number of legal immigrants.

Home Office officials say they have sought to take into account the fact that some illegal immigrants may not have filled in their census forms.

Immigration Minister Tony McNulty said the figures were a “best guess”.

“By its very nature, it is impossible to quantify accurately, and that remains the case,” he said.

“More training in dealing with traumatized refugees” - of course, that’s the answer

Posted by Guessedworker on Tuesday, 27 September 2005 19:53.

From the Norwegian/English language newspaper, Aftenposten:-

Police in the southeastern county of Østfold have been spending lots of time at an asylum center in Våler, where a group of refugees from Chechnya have demanded that strict Muslim laws be followed. Police worry that center administrators have lost control.
Both residents at the center at Nordbybråten in Våler and employees working there have been frightened by the group of around a dozen Chechen refugees, reports local newspaper Moss Avis. The Chechens allegedly are demanding that everyone must pray to Allah, that no one can wear shorts and that they must be allowed to be the first to take their meals.

Should immigrants pay lower taxes?

Posted by Guest Blogger on Friday, 23 September 2005 04:09.

Sweden is a land of high taxes. One consequence of this is that some skilled immigrants, understandably, find it a less attractive option for settlement than elsewhere.

So a government business agency has called for skilled immigrants to pay a lower tax rate than native born Swedes.

Kai Hammerich, of the Invest in Sweden Agency, wants to lure more workers from China and India to work in the IT and medical fields (despite considerable unemployment amongst university graduates in Sweden).

His suggestion has met with a warm response from skilled immigrants. This is how “Andrew” from Singapore sees it,

Follow Australia? - maybe not

Posted by Guest Blogger on Saturday, 27 August 2005 08:40.

John Ray recently complained that America isn’t allowing in enough skilled migrants. He believes that the US should follow Australia’s lead and bring in more Indian and Chinese computer programmers and engineers.

What John didn’t mention was how controversial the skilled migration program actually is in Australia.

The problem is that it’s very difficult to recruit migrants with exactly those skills needed by the Australian economy at a particular time.

The result is that skilled migration often ends up creating a labour surplus in particular fields which is bad for everyone. It makes it harder for local graduates to get jobs, and it means that many highly skilled migrants end up driving taxis in Australia rather than doing good work in their home countries.

As far back as 1996, there were researchers warning of this problem. This, for instance, is a quote from the Business Review Weekly of November 18th 1996,

Aftenposten reports rape shock

Posted by Guest Blogger on Monday, 01 August 2005 12:16.

Professor Andrew Fraser is still making the nightly news here in Australia. If this continues he will soon be a household name.

The latest news is that he is neither sacked nor suspended, but will not be allowed to teach again (his students have told reporters that they very much wish to continue their courses with him).

If you remember, one of the reasons Professor Fraser is under siege is because he warned that immigration from some sources could increase crime levels in Australia. He was even called “weird” at one right-liberal website (Catallaxy) for making this claim. I wonder, though, what his detractors would make of the following information.

The Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten has published an article today headlined “Oslo rape statistics shock”.

Right Now! looks to organise

Posted by Guessedworker on Monday, 25 July 2005 20:52.

My thanks to Anthony E for bringing my attention to this important anouncement in the current issue of Derek Turner’s splendid Right Now! magazine.  Further comment would be superfluous - save that, obviously, this needs to be encouraged in every possible way.

A campaign against mass immigration?

Immigration into Britain has grown massively, and millions more immigrants are expected in the coming years, along with further substantial alteration of the population.  Consequently, a considered, rational, non-party and broadly based campaign against mass immigration and multiracialism has been proposed. Dedicated volunteers are needed, to decide its name, to discuss its strategy, and to form an initial committee to turn ideas into action.  Please write, indicating your willingness to help and any organisational experience or abilities, to ‘Campaign against mass immigration’ (the name is provisional), c/o ‘Right Now!’, Box 361, 78 Marylebone High Street, London W1U 5AP.

Migration Dialogue and Migration News

Posted by Guessedworker on Sunday, 24 April 2005 18:08.

Tim Gillin has drawn my attention to this service, Migration Dialogue, and its subscription newsletter, Migration News.  Both are run by Philip Martin, Department of Agricultural Economics, University of California, Davis, California and tend, therefore, to have an agricultural focus.  The newsletter is free of charge in electronic form.  Reporting is politically neutral, insomuch as anything can be said to be so.  Which at least leaves us something to do!
