Majorityrights Central > Category: MediaHitchens the Good - Peter, that is - has been charged with leading the Daily Mail’s attempt to join the blogging revolution. All the dailies are at it now, following the Guardian’s percipient lead. They are singing along with the late Lionel Bart’s prince of cunning, desperately reviewing the situation. The situation is this ... The print media has managed to survive the depredations of news broadcast by radio and then television by offering the reader a special relationship. Newspapers stand or fall according to the loyalty of the reader. So the deal is: the paper plays on his bias, however crude that may be and, from a journalistic point of view, however much disingenuity that entails. And in exchange the reader gives them his undivided attention. Week in, week out. “You gettum titillated, me gettum rich … and powerful.” None are more rich nor more powerful than Rupert Murdoch. In his speech to The Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers in London a fortnight ago he identified “reasoned comment” (though God knows its mostly just comment) as the diamond and pearl encrusted centre-piece of this arrangement. But is it beginning to prove inadequate to its task? Murdoch may think so. Certainly, he thinks that the internet revolution, with blogging at its heart, will be the death of newsprint.
The BNP website has a post on the truly macabre fate of fourteen-years old Charlene Downes. You can be sure they would not do so if the mainstream media was doing its job. Charlene was last seen by her family on 3rd November, 2003. She had walked from her Blackpool home to the North Pier, and never returned. For more than two years the police pursued their enquiries diligently, categorising the case as a murder investigation as well as a “missing persons”. Some 3,000 men were DNA-tested during the course of the investigation, and an appeal was launched on the BBC’s “Crimewatch”. A few days ago the breakthrough came and this brief report appeared - though originally in which paper, regional or national, I have not yet discovered.
From a fascinating writeup about the cowbird:
“BNP chief’s Muslim slur” ran this morning’s headline in The Sun. “THE racist leader of the British National Party branded Asians rapists and muggers at a secret meeting, a court heard yesterday. Nick Griffin whipped up hatred against Muslims by claiming gangs of them were targeting white women, a jury was told. He even claimed the sex attacks were part of their RELIGION, it was alleged.” That is what passes for balanced reporting at Britain’s biggest-selling newspaper. No doubt The Sun’s libel lawyer cleared this nakedly hostile line on the basis of those four little words, “a jury was told”. Regardless, it remains a disgrace.
Riot: Minor disturbance involving White sports fans. Disturbance: Major Ethnic race riot. Youth: Ethnic mugger. Mugger:White mugger. Racist murder: Ethnic killed by White criminal. Apparently motiveless killing: racist murder of White person.
I am not sure how to interpret the tale of two not particularly current documents circulated by the Church in Italy, and both disapproving of mixed marriages between Italian women and Muslim immigrants to Italy. Yes, it’s extremely heartening that this message is being spoken. But I am puzzled why the BBC’s Rome correspondent should file this article at all. This is what he says:-
Thanks to Michael R for the link to this interesting survey of US media.
One can, I guess, query the utility of the left-right model. But one can’t query the utility of a formal measure of bias that pitches even supposedly right-wing media in the centre or left-of-centre. It’s what we’ve always known - liberalism is endemic and the bulk of those who consider themselves on the right aren’t. The full report will be published in The Quarterly Journal of Economics, due out any day now.
